What is it about geeks and Star Wars? A question that is so elusive to an answer because finding out why such brilliant minds would toy with such a unrealistic fantasy is hard to grasp. However, if there is a Star Wars convention anywhere around geeks can be found in attendance by the masses. Some even attending in outfits that cost in the thousands to have that true Star Wars experience.

Perhaps it is their mind that drawls to the appeal of the movie. The futuristic devices that let their eager brains search for situations and capabilities that non-geek minds could never truly understand. Or it gives them a break from circuits and hard drives while still holding to the world of electronic inventions. Or it could just be the thrill of holding a light saber.

Whatever the possible attraction is it isn’t going away anytime soon nor is it just a phase. Geeks love star wars so much that a geek pride day was created based on Star Wars. On May 25 the geeks come out to commemorate the release of the first Star Wars film. So make sure you put on your Vader helmet and celebrate with a geek you love!

We geeks are still regular people. Sure, we tinker with mathematics sharp enough to slice chromium or know enough tentacles of the Ruy Lopez to choke a chessboard; but let’s face it, after our long unbalanced days we need a recharge like everyone else. Fortunately, we have a familiar pattern of pastimes to recharge those LFP batteries of our souls. Discovering a high caloric chemical compound for a sugar substitute, for example, is enough of a refresher for the mildest chesterfield solanum tuberosum in us. Deep down we know there will be a sunflower day when people crave the taste of aspartame but want a little energy to go with it. Smart phone applications for the elderly, synthetic alligator skin for chic environmentalists: all endeavors too dubious for the masses but a relaxing fray into idleness for the true geek. The jock climbs the mountain on a rainy day because its there, we geeks let our hair down to reel in the future for the same reason. We may seem unbalanced and eccentric in our idleness, but that’s the time we get our big ideas. For fun we create what you dare not think. For work we capitalize on it.

It’s hard to imagine a former O.C. co-ed could ever accrue enough geek cred to land among the chosen few in fanboy lore. On the other hand, when you’ve graced the number 1 spot on Maxim‘s Hot 100 List, where you may or may not have caught you’re first big break is of trivial irrelevance. Though a bona fide star in the movie industry for some time now, Olivia Wilde has only recently begun to make those too often preoccupied with World of Warcraft take notice of the women walking this actual planet. Cast in the highly anticipated sequel Tron: Legacy, as digital warrior Quorra, technically a computer program not a person, the fact the actress herself is of tangible human origin still disputed among scientists and science fiction fans alike. Finely formed to the point fellow techie temptress Megan Fox was inclined to divulge, “Olivia Wilde is so sexy she makes me want to strangle a mountain ox with my bare hands (not a made up quote),” perhaps Hollywood being filled with digitally engineered co-inhabitants really is the most plausible explanation of her aesthetically perfect presence.Of course, if the eyes are to be trusted and conspiracy theories entirely ignored, Wilde hails from New York City, but maintains dual citizenship in both the United States and the Republic of Ireland (suspect, we know). No one forgets their first love, and for an entire generation of self-proclaimed geeks there is one cinnamon-bunned queen, better yet princess, who reigns above all. Princess Leia burst on to the silver screen and into the hearts of fans many worlds over with the release of the original Star Wars film in 1977. However, it was arguably the franchise’s 3^rd installment, Return of the Jedi, when Princess Leia’s star rose to its peak as an intergalactic sex symbol. Famously clad in a metal bikini, while held prisoner in Jabba the Hutt’s palace, Leia captured the fantasy of millions of fan-boys, producing one of the most iconic images in the storied Star Wars saga and arguably the most well known and often imitated bikini in movie history.Real life actress Carrie Fisher, who was fortunate enough to enjoy a wildly successful 3 movie stint as Leia, originally objected to her character’s most suggestive wardrobe selection, citing an implied subordination in relation to the male characters, of course, Leia was in fact being held captive in the scene, which is inherently subordinate in itself. Though the bikini stunt obviously pandered to the highly male-skewing audience, few critics objected with the final product. When social outcast Sam Witwicky stumbles backwards into a life-changing used car purchase, he’s already years deep in a multi-year mega-crush on classmate Mikaela Banes, portrayed by mega-babe Megan Fox. With a natural aptitude for machinery that would rival that of professional mechanics, Banes isn’t your stereotypical high school “it” girl, even if she does start the movie dating a hot-shot football player. Though Sam believes her to be well out of his league, Banes atypical background, the daughter of a paroled car thief, combined with her automobile obsession, naturally draws close to Sam, whose otherworldly car fascinates her. As Sam displays his predestined heroics, he eventually wins over Banes, helping the Autobots to defeat the Decepticons in a battle for Earth’s fortunes.The first Transformers film launched Megan Fox to a cult status sex symbol in the geek community. Aside from her smokin’ hot figure, Fox’s character Banes captures every geeks fantasy by displaying a natural knowhow and mechanical curiosity that eludes stereotypical girls of her level of attractiveness. Long before raiding Jennifer Aniston‘s happy home, Angelina Jolie captured the heart of geeks across the country when she took on the role of Lara Croft in the film Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. Even before Jolie gave the wildly popular action-adventure game’s female protagonist an official face on the big screen, Lara Croft was already highly revered as arguably the world’s most famous and socially acceptable virtual sex symbol. Croft’s official back story describes her as a born aristocrat of London origin, having attended Scottish boarding school followed by a foray into Switzerland for higher education. Throughout the 90′s the X-files stole the science fiction spotlight on an almost weekly basis, accruing a loyal and dedicated fan base that kept the show on the air for nine seasons, not to mention two major motion pictures. Much of the male driven fanaticism surrounding the show centered upon the fair skinned red headed FBI Special Agent Dana Scully. While fans are drawn to her classic beauty, a well-rounded medical school background Agent Scully gives science geeks everywhere a woman with the complete package. Though she stems from a Catholic upbringing, Scully’s strong desire for scientific confirmation as opposed to speculation further endears her to geeks worldwide. While her partner Fox Mulder is a believer in the supernatural, Scully is staunchly skeptical by nature, looking at merely the facts that can be proved through scientific method. Constantly consumed by intergalactic mysteries yet unwilling to relinquish her lab-coat mentality, it’s no world-wonder why science fiction fans hold a special place in their heart for Gillian Anderson’s most famous role.Anderson was first drawn to the role as a result of the strong independent and intelligent female character she saw in Agent Scully when initially reading the script. Though the studio initially wanted someone with a longer television resume and more blatant sex appeal, Anderson eventually booked the gig, and perhaps to the network’s surprise developed quite the lovesick following. Though maybe not as sexy in terms of platinum blonde hair or olive tanned skin, fans appreciated her more refined look, almost unique in its time on the TV screen. It’s every geek’s dream. Purchase your new apartment right across the hall from a blonde bombshell who’s outgoing enough to overcome her neighbors’ natural shyness and genuinely enjoys the company of her socially awkward friends amid the attentions of the muscular jock-type suitors that regularly come calling. If it seems too good to be true, it’s probably because it’s the premise for the successful sitcom Big Bang Theory. After all, stereotypical geek or male model, the general rule of thumb is no attractive woman will ever live in an apartment that directly borders yours or be seated next to you on an airplane. In hindsight, the Lost travelers should have been more suspicious something was amuck as there are never that many good looking people on the same flight.Air travel aside, Penny, played by Kaley Cuoco in Big Bang Theory, epitomizes the modern day nerd crush. Genuine and unassuming, the Midwestern aspiring actress who pays the bills by waiting tables is everything her intelligently inclined counterparts are not. Gifted in social skills, if not traditional academia, she prefers to gush over pop culture as opposed to atomic fusion, while holding more stock in horoscopes than scientific theory. Still, it is her contrast to the typical geeks on the show, many of whom struggle to even communicate with their female friend, that sets penny apart as the ultimate infatuation. She stands as the perfect model of the type of girl such guys could never land, finally interacting and living in close proximity. Over the course of the show, however, Penny shows her own knack for traditionally nerdy behavior. Whether it’s her surprising natural aptitude for Halo 3 or brief obsession with fantasy-game Age of Conan, her subtly inclinations towards geekdom make her all the more endearing to four-eyed fans across the country.Off-screen, Cuoco is somewhat of a tomboy, enjoying kickboxing, bowling and banging on the drums. She was a nationally ranked amateur tennis player in her youth, still enjoying table tennis as a more convenient hobby.
